OTD: Australia won their fourth Women’s T20 World Cup title in 2018

Australia defeated England by eight wickets and 29 balls to spare in the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2018 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua to win their fourth 20-over title on this day in 2018. Ashleigh Gardner secured the Player of the Match award for her all-round outing.

England were bowled out for a paltry 105 in 19.4 overs after electing to bat first. No one other than Danni Wyatt-Hodge (43 off 37) and Heather Knight (25 off 28) was able to register a double-digit score. Gardner was the pick of the bowlers with a three-wicket haul to her name. Megan Schutt and Georgia Wareham picked up a couple of wickets. Wyatt-Hodge and Knight were two of Gardner’s scalps.

Australia started off cautiously on a pitch which wasn’t the easiest to bat. The opening batters were dismissed by the eighth over. Gardner and Meg Lanning, coming at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, made sure there were no further hiccups during the run-chase. The two ended up unbeaten on 33 off 26 and 28 off 30 to seal a convincing win. Three bowlers from England conceded runs at a rate of 10/over.

Australia had previously won the Women’s T20 World Cup title in 2010, 2012 and 2014. England were denied their second chance at glory after winning the inaugural edition t of the tournament. Alyssa Healy emerged as the Player of the Tournament in 2018 with 225 runs in five innings while operating at a strike rate of 144.23.
