OTD: Australia beat New Zealand to clinch T20 World Cup 2021

OTD: Australia beat New Zealand to clinch T20 World Cup 2021

Australia had won their maiden T20 World Cup title on this day, November 14, in 2021, when they defeated New Zealand in the final of the tournament in Dubai.

Australia and New Zealand had clashed in the final of the T20 World Cup 2021 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. It was a huge moment for Australia, who had lost to England in the final of the tournament in 2010 in the West Indies.

Aaron Finch, the Australia captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first. Australia bowlers did well, removing openers Martin Guptill (28) and Daryl Mitchell (11) early. But New Zealand captain Kane Williamson proved to be the thorn in their flesh.

Williamson held the Kiwi innings together, scoring 85 in 48 balls with 10 fours and three sixes while some small but useful contributions also came from Glenn Phillips (18 runs) and James Neesham (13*) as New Zealand managed to post 172/4 in 20 overs. Josh Hazlewood starred with 3/16 in his four overs, while Adam Zampa took one wicket.

Trent Boult gave the perfect start to New Zealand, removing Finch for five runs but then David Warner and Mitchell Marsh added 92 runs for the second wicket. Warner made 53 in 38 balls while Marsh hammered 77* in just 50 balls, hitting six fours and four sixes.

Glenn Maxwell added the finishing touches, scoring 28* in 18 balls as Australia achieved the 173-run target in 18.5 overs with eight wickets in hand. Boult took two wickets for New Zealand but ended up on the losing side.

This was New Zealand’s second loss in an ICC final in three years, having lost to England in the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup final at Lord’s.

Australia won their first-ever T20 World Cup and remains the only team to win all four ICC tournaments. They have won the ICC ODI World Cup in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015, and 2023; the ICC Champions Trophy in 2006 and 2009; the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021, and the ICC World Test Championship final in 2023.
