PCB makes shocking move, appoints Test captain Shan Masood as New Director of International Cricket Operations

Test captain Shan Masood will now be taking up a dual role after being appointed as the new Director of International Cricket Operations by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He recently led Pakistan in the two-match Test series against South Africa, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

A PCB source said on Friday that after discussions within the board there was a clear consensus that Shan is the best man to lead the international cricket affairs department. It is a rare occurrence as not too many individuals have been appointed in an administrator’s role while playing for the national team.

Sources in Pakistan cricket say the announcement was made by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi during a dinner meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who was visited on Friday by the Pakistan team as well as the touring members of the South African squad.

Usman Wahla served in the role before being recently suspended for mishandling the Handshakegate during the Asia Cup league encounter between India and Pakistan in Dubai last month. He was subsequently reinstated but his second innings is set for a premature ending. Reports suggest that he would be shifted to a different department, most likely the Pakistan Super League, following Masood’s appointment.

“This is a multi-dimensional leadership role, emphasising the management of the Pakistan team, supervising international cricket operations. The incumbent’s key functions is to plan, organise, execute and oversee international tours,” PCB mentioned in its recent advertisement for the post.

Former Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq was reportedly the frontrunner to take up the position. However, it is eventually going towards the 36-year-old Masood.

The left-handed batter made his international debut in 2013. He has played 44 Tests, nine ODIs, and 19 T20Is. He isn’t considered for white-ball formats, but the PCB have shown faith in him when it comes to Test matches.

After drawing the Test series, Pakistan will now play a three T20Is against the Proteas. South Africa’s tour of Pakistan ends with a three-match ODI series.
