Zimbabwe and Namibia secure spots for Women's T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers

Zimbabwe and Namibia have booked their berth in the Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier after making it to the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Division One Qualifier. Neither Zimbabwe nor Namibia have managed to make it to a Women’s World Cup till date across any format.

The Global Qualifier will take place early next year in Nepal as 10 teams will square off for four spots in the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup in June and July. Zimbabwe and Namibia join Nepal, Bangladesh, Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands, Thailand and USA. The 10th nation will be decided from the East Asia-Pacific Regional Qualifier, which is scheduled to commence on September 9.

Zimbabwe got the better of Uganda Women in the first semi-final by five wickets and 14 balls to spare. Nyasha Gwanzura secured the Player of the Match for her all-round performance (2/17 in four overs and 17 off 6). On the other hand, Namibia had a more dominating outing against Tanzania in the second semi-final as the Sune Wittmann-led team defeated Tanzania by eight wickets and 37 balls left in the bank.

Coming to the format of the Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier, the 10 teams will be split up into two groups each. The teams finishing in the top six will make it to the Super Six stage. There are two venues decided for the tournament, which will take place between January 12 and February 2: the Lower Mulpani Cricket Stadium and the Upper Mulpani Cricket Stadium in Kathmandu.

For the first time in its history, the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2026 will see 12 teams participating. New Zealand Women will arrive as the defending champions. They had emerged triumphant against South Africa in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS) last year. The 10th iteration of the action-packed tournament will be held in England.
