Former cricketer Yograj Singh has come out in support of India head coach Gautam Gambhir, stating that he should not be criticised as he is fulfilling his role effectively. Under Gambhir’s guidance, India secured a historic 336-run victory over England in the second Test at Edgbaston, marking their first-ever Test win at the iconic venue, in all the games they have played here.
Prior to this triumph, the Shubman Gill-led side had faced criticism due to a poor run in red-ball cricket, and Gambhir was under intense scrutiny. However, Yograj believes the recent win silences the doubters and expresses hope that India returns home with a series victory.
“Indian players are consistently growing and improving their game. We will always support them. We should not speak about Gautam Gambhir because he is doing well. Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Rahul Dravid are giving back to cricket because they have received so much,” Yograj said as quoted by NDTV Sports.
“Even if our team loses the series, we should not demoralise them. If you lose, you will not be there to explain; if you win, you don’t have to explain. We hope that we win the series under the captaincy of Shubman Gill,” he added.
Gambhir found himself under the radar following the Indian national side’s inconsistent run of form in the longest format of the game, particularly after their five-wicket loss to England in both teams’ opening match of the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle at Headingley, Leeds. While the 43-year-old has already made a mark in white-ball format with a Champions Trophy victory, questions were raised about his ability to instil similar aggression in red-ball internationals.
India had lost seven of their previous nine Test matches, including a 0–3 whitewash at home against New Zealand, a 3–1 series defeat in Australia, and the recent loss in Leeds. However, they also showed flashes of brilliance, dominating Australia with a commanding 265-run win in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and narrowly avoiding defeat in Brisbane with the help of weather interruptions.
With momentum on their side after a historic win at Edgbaston, India will be eager to carry their winning form into the third Test at Lord’s, starting Thursday, July 10.
