Melbourne Stars, who are yet to win a Big Bash League title, have extended Peter Moores‘ contract by another two years as their head coach. Notably, the Stars had qualified for the Playoffs in the previous season, and therefore, the side expects itself to come good under Moores’ stewardship in the coming couple of seasons as well.

While it seemed like there might some changes to the coaching and support staff, the Melbourne-based team has retained faith in Moores, which shows the amount of trust they keep in him. Moores has reciprocated to the contract extension by expressing his excitement shortly after the announcement was made official.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to sign on for another two years, I’ve already experienced some incredible moments with the club, and there was no better place to be last summer than the MCG when we got on a roll. It was a great reminder of what this club and our members and fans are capable of,” he was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

The head coach also opened up on their plans for the upcoming season. He not only mentioned that Marcus Stoinis would grow into his role and continue as the Stars’ skipper, but also opened up on strengthening the side in some key areas in the upcoming overseas draft. The team currently has ten players in the list, which includes star all-rounder Tom Curran along with new signings in Liam Hatcher and Mitchell Swepson.

“Will only grow in that role again (Marcus Stoinis). Our list is in a really good place, and we’ve got a great opportunity to strengthen a couple of key areas in the upcoming draft, I’m not putting a limit on what we can all achieve together,” Moores added.

Melbourne Stars general manager Max Abbot also seems to be putting a lot of trust in Moores, saying that the players have given him great feedback and appreciated the role he played in getting the side out of trouble after losing five games in a row in the previous season, which was eventually won by Hobart Hurricanes after Sydney Thunder knocked the Stars out in the knockout stage.

“The feedback from all parts of the organisation has been overwhelmingly positive in the way Peter led the group as a coach over the last two seasons. You don’t come back from a 0-5 start to make the finals without leadership in the dressing room, and that is a testament to the way Peter was able to maintain camaraderie and belief within the playing group to turn the season around,” Abbot said.
