OTD | New Zealand edged past Australia in one-wicket thriller at Eden Park in World Cup 2015

OTD | New Zealand edged past Australia in one-wicket thriller at Eden Park in World Cup 2015

Back in the ODI World Cup 2015, New Zealand defeated Australia in the 20th game of the tournament with just a wicket to spare. It was an interesting game of cricket as Australia scored just 151 runs in the first innings, courtesy of Trent Boult’s fifer. Boult was just outstanding with the ball, helping New Zealand take the game home.

Interestingly, it was Australia who won the toss and decided to bat first. However, they weren’t aware of the havoc that Boult was going to create at Eden Park. Tim Southee was no less than Boult. He drew Australia’s first blood by dismissing Aaron Finch in the third over of the game. After that, wickets kept falling at regular intervals.

New Zealand didn’t allow the Aussies to form any partnership, which was the best part of their bowling. After that, Boult cleaned the middle-order. The highest score was made by Brad Haddi,n who scored 43 runs in 41 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes. The next was David Warner, who had 34 runs in 42 balls.

Well, Australia’s bowling wasn’t bad, either. They dismissed nine Kiwi batters in the second innings, making 152 runs look like a mountain. Mitchell Starc was the man for Australia who claimed six wickets. However, his performance went in vain as New Zealand somehow managed to win the game by just one run.

Brandon McCullam and Kane Williamson made a stunning partnership in the top order, but later, the failure of the middle order caused a problem for the Kiwis. Corey Anderson jumped into the race and scored 26 runs off 42 balls and helped the Blackcaps get back into the game. Williamson was there till the end, scoring an unbeaten 45 runs off 42 balls.
