Despite a career marred by injury and inconsistency, Pedro Collins was a formidable force in West Indies’ pace department. The left-arm pacer made his international debut in the Test format against Australia in March 1999 after an impressive performance for West Indies-A against India. 

The Barbados cricketer represented the Caribbean nation in 32 Tests, taking 106 Test wickets at an average of 34.63, including three five-wicket hauls. As Collins celebrates his 48th birthday today (August 12), let’s take a look at three of his best bowling performances in Tests.

3. 4/116 vs India, Gros Islet, 2006 

One of Collins’ best performances in Test cricket was against India in 2006. Centuries from Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Kaif helped the visitors post a massive 588/8 before declaring in the first innings. When the rest of the Windies bowlers struggled to find rhythm, Collins grabbed four wickets for 116 runs. In reply, the hosts could score only 215 and failed to avoid follow-on. However, the match eventually ended in a draw as West Indies managed to end the final day with 297/7 on the board.

2. 4/76 vs England, St. John’s, 2004

This is a historic match for the West Indies, but not because of Collins’ impressive spell. The Windies skipper Brian Lara slammed a record 400 to help his team declare the first innings on 751/5. In reply, England were bundled out for 285, thanks to Collins’ 4/76 and Tino Best’s 3/37. However, the match ended in a draw as England managed to save five wickets in the second innings with a score of 422.

1. 6/76 vs New Zealand, Bridgetown, 2002

Invited to bat first in the first Test of the 2002 series, New Zealand scored 337 runs on the back of a brilliant century by captain Stephen Fleming. A poor showing by the Windies batters resulted in them bundled out for just 107 runs. The Black Caps’ aim to take a huge lead was dealt a huge blow after Collins’ six-wicket haul wreaked havoc. However, they still managed to score 243 and set a massive target of 474. Despite getting off to a good start, the hosts were bowled out for 269, handing the visitors a massive 204-run win.
