The duo of Harry Brook and Jamie Smith created history on Day 3 of the second Test of the ongoing five-match series between England and India. They became the first pair to register a 200-plus partnership for the sixth wicket or lower for England against India in Test cricket.

The ongoing Edgbaston Test is also only the third instance of more than one 200-plus stands being scored for the sixth wicket or lower in the same game. The first two ones occurred in 1955 and 2009, respectively.

Tests with more than one 200-plus stands for the sixth wicket or lower:

Fixture Venue Year Partnerships
WI vs AUS Bridgetown 1955 Keith Miller-Ron Archer (206 for sixth wicket)Denis Atkinson-Clairmonte Depeiaza (347 for seventh wicket)
IND vs SL Ahmedabad 2009 Rahul Dravid-MS Dhoni (224 for sixth wicket)Mahela Jayawardene-Prasanna Jayawardene (351 for sixth wicket)
ENG vs IND Birmingham 2025 Shubman Gill-Ravindra Jadeja (203 for sixth wicket)Harry Brook-Jamie Smith (271* for sixth wicket)

The two have been in command and have rotated the strike while dispatching the ball to the fence whenever required. Smith joined Brook in the middle in just the second over of the day after a double-wicket over by Mohammed Siraj.

Siraj started the day quite brilliantly by dismissing Joe Root (22 off 46) and Ben Stokes off consecutive deliveries, with Rishabh Pant playing a role in both the wickets. The hosts were in the doldrums at 84 for 5 while trying to get close to India’s mammoth first innings total of 587.

Earlier in the game, a splendid double ton by skipper Shubman Gill (269 off 387) led his side all the way in what was a thoroughly dominating performance by the visitors. Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 off 107) and Ravindra Jadeja (89 off 137) missed out on well-deserved hundreds.
