MI vs GT (56th Match) – Highlights
The Gujarat Titans defeated the Mumbai Indians by 3 wickets in perhaps the most exciting chase of the season in the Indian Premier League’s 56th match at Wankhede Stadium on May 6th, 2025. After a lot of rain, there was concern about whether the match could actually finish, and when the rain stopped, the target changed. What a thrilling finish for fans, with Gujarat finishing on 147 with none to spare!
It was always going to be a tough day for the Mumbai Indians, who lost the toss and were put into bat first on a two-paced surface. An early hammering through the loss of Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma cheaply within 4 overs set the tone early, moments later Will Jacks arrived and began to counter-attack with his innings of 53 runs from just 35 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes in his aggressive innings.
Unfortunately, he did not find solid support from the other end, with Suryakumar Yadav only scoring 35 runs from 24 balls, after which MI were left staggering with a middle-order collapse. Very little came from skipper Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma, and despite Corbin Bosch’s 27 runs from 22 balls, MI ended with 155 runs for 8 in their 20 overs.
The bowlers from GT were tidy with their lines, but Khan was the tidiest, returning figures of 1 for 21 in four bowling overs. Sai Kishore had two wickets, and the eventual Cricinfo MVP of the match Gerald Coetzee did pick up an important wicket and consistently put pressure on the batters.
After a revised target of 147 from 19 overs following the DLS method, the Titans experienced a minor stumble after they lost Sai Sudharsan in the 2nd over. It was a slow inning, but the very important inning was Shubman Gill, who played an important inning with 43 off 46 balls and was able to hold the innings together.
Shubman was an important factor in keeping the innings together because he never really got into any sort of rhythm with his strike rate. He also made three important catches on the field, and all of this contributed to him getting player of the match.
Jos Buttler set the tone with a lofty 30 in only one delivery of facing, Sherfane Rutherford brought momentum in the middle overs with a punchy 28 from just 15 balls, Bumrah and Boult kept the wickets coming throughout the chase (2 wickets each), but some cool-headed finishing from Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee, saw Gujarat home in comfortable fashion.
In Coetzee’s case winning was important, and he finished with a timely 12 (off 6 balls) but fell with just one run required. Arshad Khan showed reasonable composure in the storm of the finish to see GT home off the final ball.
