LAKR vs SFU (30th Match) – Highlights
After a match full of fireworks and records, the LAKR ended their Major League Cricket 2025 season with a brilliant win over SFU by 11 runs (DLS Method) at Lauderhill on July 6. Even though their playoff chances were zero, the LA Knight Riders put on their best effort of the season behind a terrific hundred from Andre Fletcher and important contributions from Alex Hales and Sherfane Rutherford. In a high-scoring thriller, both sides showed their batting firepower, but the Knight Riders held their nerve not to finish below the Unicorns (how ironic).
After rain cut the game to 19 overs a side, the Knight Riders took to the crease and tore into the bowling on a lifeless deck. Andre Fletcher was in beast mode, hammering 118 off just 58 balls with 10 fours and 8 sixes. He started cautiously but unleashed his full range once set, dispatching bowlers to all parts of the ground. Opening partner Alex Hales was no less brutal, smashing a 26-ball 58 that set the tone in the powerplay. Together, they added 94 for the opening wicket in just 7.4 overs, laying the perfect foundation.
Once Hales departed for 99, Rutherford took charge and built a 97-run partnership with Fletcher at No. 2. Rutherford scored 49 runs off 28 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes and maintained a high-scoring velocity right until his demise. Fletcher’s end came at the last ball of the innings, but by this point, the damage had occurred well before. The LA Knight Riders were on a record-setting ride that finished with 243/3 in 19 overs, which is their highest total in MLC.
In reply, the Unicorns’ chase began disastrously. Their top three — Matthew Short, Finn Allen, and Jake Fraser-McGurk — managed just 5 runs between them, leaving the side tottering at 7/3 by the second over. However, what followed was a breathtaking counterattack from young Sanjay Krishnamurthi. Walking in under immense pressure, the left-hander played the knock of his life, slamming 92 off just 40 balls with 7 fours and 7 sixes. He played the rescuer’s role, forging valuable alliances with Hassan Khan and Hammad Azam to keep the Unicorns in the hunt.
Despite Krishnamurthi’s fireworks, the required rate kept climbing, and wickets at regular intervals derailed the chase. Karthik Gattepalli was the standout with the ball for LA, claiming 3/31 in his four overs, including the wickets of Short, Krishnamurthi, and Khan at critical moments. Captain Jason Holder also stepped up with a disciplined spell of 2/28, while van Schalkwyk took 2 wickets at the death to seal the deal.
San Francisco ultimately folded for 233 in 18.5 overs, falling short by 11 runs on DLS. The Unicorns will rue their top-order collapse, which made Krishnamurthi’s brilliance a lost cause. With this result, LA Knight Riders bowed out of the tournament with a win to cherish, while the Unicorns’ hopes of finishing in the top two were dashed.
