UPW-W vs DC-W (8th Match) – Highlights

In this article, we will discuss the thrilling encounter between UPW Women and DC Women in the 8th match of the Women’s Premier League, held under the lights at Bengaluru on February 22, 2025. UP Warriorz Women delivered a commanding performance, securing a convincing 33-run victory over Delhi Capitals Women.

Batting first, UPW Women posted an imposing total of 177/9 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings began on a cautious note as opener Kiran Navgire scored 17 runs off 20 balls, but her dismissal by Arundhati Reddy in the 7th over left the team struggling to build momentum.

The top order faltered with Dinesh Vrinda (4 off 7) and skipper Deepti Sharma (13 off 19) falling cheaply, while Tahlia McGrath contributed 24 runs off 23 balls, providing a brief period of stability. Shweta Sehrawat played a quick cameo of 11 off 6 balls, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, leaving the Warriorz in a vulnerable position at 89/6 by the 14th over.

The game-changing moment arrived with Chinelle Henry’s blistering knock. She played a breathtaking innings, smashing 62 runs off just 23 balls, including 8 sixes and 2 fours, at an astonishing strike rate of 269.56. Her explosive hitting in the death overs propelled UP Warriorz to a competitive total. Sophie Ecclestone added a quick 12 off 8 balls, while Saima Thakor chipped in with an unbeaten 4 off 2 balls.

Extras played a significant role, contributing 25 runs, including 17 wides, which further boosted the total. Among the bowlers, Jess Jonassen was the standout performer for Delhi Capitals, claiming 4 wickets for 31 runs in her 4 overs, while Marizanne Kapp also bowled economically, picking up 2 wickets for 18 runs.

Chasing a challenging target of 178 runs, DC Women struggled to maintain a steady run rate against UP Warriorz’s disciplined bowling. Despite a promising start by Shafali Verma, who scored 24 off 30 balls, the early dismissals of Meg Lanning (5 off 5) and Shafali in quick succession left the Capitals in trouble.

The only bright spot in their batting lineup was Jemimah Rodrigues, who played a fluent and aggressive innings of 56 off 35 balls, striking 8 fours and 1 six at a strike rate of 160.00. However, her dismissal in the 15th over triggered a dramatic collapse.

The middle and lower order failed to offer much resistance. Marizanne Kapp (9 off 9), Annabel Sutherland (5 off 5), and Jess Jonassen (5 off 4) were dismissed without making a significant impact. Niki Prasad provided a late spark with a quick 18 off 10 balls, but the Capitals fell short, being bowled out for 144 runs in 19.3 overs.

The bowling for UP Warriorz was led by Kranti Goud, who took 4 wickets for 25 runs in her 4-over spell, including the key wickets of Lanning, Verma, Rodrigues, and Jonassen. Grace Harris also delivered a match-winning performance with the ball, picking up 4 wickets for 15 runs in just 2.3 overs, wrapping up the tail efficiently. Deepti Sharma contributed with 1 wicket for 25 runs, providing crucial breakthroughs.

Overall, UP Warriorz Women dominated both with the bat and ball. Their middle-order recovery, driven by Chinelle Henry’s explosive knock, and the disciplined bowling attack were the defining factors in their 33-run triumph over Delhi Capitals Women.
