ENG vs IND (1st ODI) – Highlights

In this article, we will discuss the thrilling 1st ODI between IND and ENG, held under the lights at Nagpur on February 6, 2025. The ENG vs IND match was part of England’s tour of India, and it provided fans with an exciting contest between two cricketing powerhouses. England, batting first, managed to post a total of 248 runs, setting a target of 249 for India. In response, the Indian team chased down the target comfortably, reaching 251/6 in just 38.4 overs, securing a four-wicket victory with 68 balls to spare.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, ENG got off to a flying start, thanks to the aggressive intent of Phil Salt. The wicketkeeper-batsman played a blistering knock of 43 off just 26 balls, smashing five fours and three sixes before being run out due to brilliant fielding by Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. However, after the early momentum, England’s batting order suffered a mini-collapse.

Ben Duckett (32 off 29) looked promising but fell to debutant Harshit Rana, who had an immediate impact by dismissing Harry Brook for a duck shortly after. The Indian bowlers kept things tight, and pressure mounted as Joe Root (19 off 31) was trapped LBW by Ravindra Jadeja, leaving England at a shaky 111/4.

England captain Jos Buttler anchored the innings with a steady 52 off 67, playing a responsible knock under pressure. He found support from young all-rounder Jacob Bethell, who impressed with a well-compiled 51 off 64. The duo revived England’s innings, but just when they seemed to take control, India struck back. Buttler was caught by Hardik Pandya off Axar Patel, while Bethell fell LBW to Jadeja in the 43rd over.

England’s lower order failed to accelerate as Liam Livingstone (5 off 10) and Brydon Carse (10 off 18) struggled against disciplined Indian bowling. Jofra Archer contributed a useful 21* off 18, but England was eventually bowled out for 248 in 47.4 overs. Harshit Rana (3/53) and Jadeja (3/26) were the standout bowlers for India, while Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with a wicket each.
Chasing 249, IND had a shaky start as Jofra Archer dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal for 15, while Saqib Mahmood sent Rohit Sharma back for just 2. At 19/2, the pressure was on India, but Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer launched a brilliant counterattack.

Iyer was particularly aggressive, smashing 59 off just 36 balls, including nine fours and two sixes, ensuring that England couldn’t maintain their early advantage. His fearless batting helped India reach 113 before he was trapped LBW by Bethell. Meanwhile, Gill continued his composed approach, anchoring the innings and building crucial partnerships.

Axar Patel, promoted up the order, played a crucial knock of 52 off 47 balls, accelerating the scoring with some elegant stroke play. However, Adil Rashid struck twice in quick succession, removing Axar and KL Rahul (2 off 9), bringing England back into the game at 225/5.

With India still needing 24 runs, Gill, who had played a magnificent knock of 87 off 96, was finally dismissed by Mahmood. Hardik Pandya (9* off 6) and Ravindra Jadeja (12* off 10) ensured there were no further hiccups, guiding India to victory in 38.4 overs with 68 balls to spare.
