Steve Smith walked off the field during the second innings of the WTC Final 2025 (World Test Championship) against South Africa after failing to grab Temba Bavuma’s catch in the first slip, which led to his finger injury at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s. The star player seemed to be in immense pain and called for help from the physios.

Mitchell Starc delivered a delivery on the good length. Bavuma tried to drive the ball towards the cover region, but could not make the best contact. It led to him edging the ball from the outside half of the bat. Smith, who was stationed in the first slip, seemed to have lost his concentration, as he did not react to the reflex catch in time.

As a result, the ball popped out of his hand in no time, resulting in a dropped catch. Steve Smith was hurt badly and called for help. He walked off the field and got treated by physios. Outside the boundary rope, Smith was seen getting massaged on his back by the Australian physio.

Markram bats with intent in South Africa’s run chase against Australia

The South African batters have looked better than they were in the first innings. Chasing a challenging total of 282, the batters have come with a better intent to score runs. Aiden Markram has led the charge from the front, who was unbeaten on 49*(66) by the end of the second session of the third day.

Unfortunately, he has lost a couple of his partners at the other end. Ryan Rickelton flashed at a full-length delivery in an attempt to dispatch the fuller delivery of Starc for a boundary. However, the outside edge went straight to the slip cordon, where Alex Carey committed no mistakes.

In walked Wiaan Mulder, who made a fine 27(50), before getting dismissed against the run of play. Since then, Markram and Bavuma have steadied the ship for SA, who need 188 more runs to win their maiden WTC Final. Starc has been the pick fo the bowlers for Australia with his 2/37.
