This will be the Indian team’s sixth appearance in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup since its inception. And it has been a mixed bag of results for the Men in Blues. From glories to heartbreaks, here’s a look at India’s record in T20 World Cup semi-finals.
Here is India’s record in the semi-finals of T20 World Cups
5. Versus Australia, 2007 (Won)

It was a battle of the heavyweights between India and Australia in the semifinal of the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup. India were coming off after a disappointment of the 2007 ODI World Cup, the same tournament Aussies had won. This particular match is still remembered for the historic innings by Yuvraj Singh. The stylish left-hander stunned Aussies with a breathtaking knock of 70 off just 30 balls, which included five fours and as many sixes.
India, the eventual champions, scored 188 runs, setting up the fighting total. In response, the Kangaroos only managed to score 173 in their 20 overs, losing the contest by 15 runs. Sreesanth’s wickets of Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist are still fresh in fans’ minds.
4. Versus South Africa, 2014 (Won)

After a few forgettable outings in the T20 World Cups, India reached the semi-final after seven years in 2014. They faced South Africa in this closely fought contest. Batting first, the Proteas scored 172 runs in 20 overs, with captain Faf du Plessis top-scoring with 58 off 41 balls.
From India, Ravichandran Ashwin was the star of the show with the ball, who picked up three wickets, including that famous ball to Hashim Amla, which had cleaned him up. Chasing the moderate target, a young Virat Kohli showed everyone why he is the modern-day chase master. Virat remained unbeaten, scoring 71 runs off just 44 balls, guiding his team to victory.
3. T20 World Cup 2016, vs West Indies (Lost)

It was a heartbreaking night for the hosts. The stage was set for them to qualify for the finals at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. But standing in their way was a West Indian challenge. Team India batted first, and it was once again a Virat Kohli show at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. He scored a historic knock of 89 runs in just 47 balls.
Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane, too, played handy knocks, with the hosts setting up a total of 193 runs in their 20 overs. In reply, it was a clinical chase by the Windies, as they chased down the target with two balls to spare. Lendl Simmons played a knock of his lifetime, scoring 82 in just 51 balls. A dejected Virat Kohli is what everyone remembers from this match.
2. Versus England, 2022 (Lost)

It was a disastrous night for Team India at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. After batting first, the Indian team led by Rohit Sharma put up a respectable total of 168/6 in their 20 overs. All-rounder Hardik Pandya was the star for the Men in Blues, with his scoring 63 in just 33 balls.
And what followed was a straight up disaster for team India. English openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales ran riot, chasing the target in just 16 overs. Hales was named player of the match for his unbeaten 86-run knock.

It was a rematch of the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal between India and England. Batting first, the Indian team put on a fighting total of 171 in their 20 overs. Captain Rohit led from the front with a 57-run knock. He received great support from Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja.
In reply, the English side was bundled out for just 103 runs after an impressive outing by the Indian bowlers. Spin duo Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav picked up three wickets each, whereas Jasprit Bumrah took two. The Indian team successfully took revenge for their 2022 humiliation with this performance.
