Sri Lanka head coach Gary Kirsten has acknowledged that his team is developing structure but stressed the need to translate that progress into tangible results. The assessment came after Sri Lanka’s 165-run defeat to India in the first Test at Galle International Stadium, which began on August 15, 2026.

Kirsten, who took charge of the Sri Lankan team in April 2026, reflected on the match outcome and the team’s trajectory. The coach previously led India from 2008 to 2011 and South Africa from 2011 to 2013.

Despite the loss, Kirsten identified positive elements in Sri Lanka’s response during the match. Sri Lanka was reduced to 99 for 5 in the first innings but managed to extend the contest to the fifth day, demonstrating resilience under pressure.

“We’re starting to build some shape into the team. But we need to be able to turn it into a performance at some point,” Kirsten said in a post-match press conference.

Building shape but needing performance

The head coach highlighted Sri Lanka’s ability to recover from a precarious position in the opening innings. From being 99 for 5 at the beginning of the third day, the team managed to take the Test match into the afternoon of the fifth day, which impressed Kirsten.

“From being 99 for 5 at the beginning of the third day, to then taking the Test match into the afternoon of the fifth day was particularly pleasing,” Kirsten added.

Dinusha’s Test commitment impresses Kirsten

Sonal Dinusha’s batting performance in the Galle Test impressed the head coach. The batter scored 100 and 84 across the two innings, showcasing commitment to Test cricket and demonstrating the kind of approach Kirsten wants to see from his players.

“His love for Test cricket and playing that way is particularly pleasing to me to watch,” Kirsten said of Dinusha.

Injuries open doors for young players

Sri Lanka faces selection challenges ahead of the next Test due to injury absences. Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal are unavailable, with Mendis sidelined by a hamstring problem.

This marks Sri Lanka’s second defeat in three Tests, following an innings and 217-run loss to West Indies at North Sound, Antigua, in June 2026. The injury situation creates opportunities for younger players to stake their claim in the squad.

“It creates a great opportunity for young players to come in and stake their claim,” Kirsten concluded.
