Sanjay Manjrekar recently gave his take on the absence of star Indian cricketers like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah, from the forthcoming edition of the Duleep Trophy 2024.

Manjrekar took to social media to point out that India has played 249 international matches in the last five years. However, Rohit, Kohli, and Bumrah have only played 59%, 61%, and 34% of those games, respectively. He argued that these players, who have been well-rested compared to their contemporaries, should have been picked for the domestic red-ball competition to get valuable match practice under their belts.

“India has played 249 international matches in the last 5 years. Rohit has played only 59% of those. Virat 61 % & Bumrah 34%. I see them as well rested India players. Could have been selected for the Duleep trophy,” Manjrekar tweeted.

Duleep Trophy making a comeback in a revamped format

The 61st edition of the Duleep Trophy will take place from September 5 to September 22. Four teams, A, B, C, and D will compete in the tournament, unlike recent years which was played in the zonal format. All four teams have been picked by the national selection committee. Shubman Gill, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shreyas Iyer, are the captains of teams A, B, C, and D, respectively.

Kohli and Rohit were seen in action recently during India’s 2-0 ODI series defeat in Australia earlier this month. Bumrah, however, hasn’t played competitive cricket since the T20 World Cup final in June.
