Mohammed Shami, India’s star pacer, has urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reconsider the ban on saliva use, focusing on the fact that reverse swing has necessarily been removed since the rule was passed.

A crucial weapon for fast bowlers, reverse swing, was generally achieved by making the shine on one side of the ball using saliva. Nevertheless, with the ICC stopping its use, pacers have struggled to generate movement, especially in ODI format, where two new balls are used from each end.

“We are trying to reverse the ball, but without saliva, it has become difficult. We have been constantly appealing for saliva to be allowed again. It will make the game more exciting with reverse swing coming into play,” Shami said while addressing the media after India’s Champions Trophy semifinal against Australia in Dubai.

Shami has proved his importance on the international stage, completing with impeccable figures of 3/48 in 10 overs against Australia. His role has become even more important in the campaign due to the unavailability of Jasprit Bumrah due to injury. The skillful pacer has taken the responsibility of leading India’s pace unit, sharing the new ball with either all-rounder Hardik Pandya or young Harshit Rana.

Shami added to this, saying, “I am trying to get my rhythm back and contribute more to the team. It is a big responsibility when you don’t have two frontline pacers, and I have to step up in their absence.”

The experienced seamer agreed that his workload has significantly increased without Bumrah in the team and operating at the other end, but he remains focused on contributing better for the team.

“There is added pressure when you are the main pacer, and the other option is an all-rounder. You have to pick wickets and lead from the front. I am ready to give over 100% in every game,” he added.

So far, Shami has bagged eight wickets in the Champions Trophy campaign, making him the most reliable player in the ICC tournaments.
