In a hilarious turn of events, Rinku Singh mistakenly took away Sanju Samson’s bat after a drinks break in the crucial T20 World Cup clash between India and the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Sunday, March 1.
The tension was evident during the last Super 8 fixture in the marquee event as the winner would progress to the semi-final, while the losing team would have to return home. After conceding 195/4 in the first innings, India needed their openers to get off to a good start. However, Abhishek Sharma, who had dropped two catches in the first innings, departed for an 11-ball 10.
Sanju Samson, however, hit the ground running and made good use of the field restrictions inside the power play. The wicketkeeper-batter took the attack to the West Indies bowlers, hitting boundaries at will and keeping the required run rate well in control.
Eden Gardens was packed to the rafters and fans were cheering for every run. The tension was in the air as India were in pursuit of a challenging target. However, one moment changed the mood in the stadium, albeit for a brief moment.
Rinku and Kuldeep Yadav walked out to the middle to hand Samson some water and a towel. The latter had handed his bat to Rinku before wiping his sweat with the towel. However, as Samson turned around to resume his innings, he realised that he didn’t have his bat in hand. He turned around, gave Rinku a pat on his back, and took his bat back.

Samson played his finest knock in international cricket, as he remained unbeaten on 97 off 50 balls, taking India to victory in 19.2 overs, with five wickets to spare. Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube also made useful contributions with the bat. India will now face England in the second semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, March 5.
