The opening session of the first Test between India and the West Indies in Ahmedabad belonged completely to the hosts, with the bowling unit claiming five wickets before lunch. The biggest moment came just before the break when ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav produced a dream delivery to castle Shai Hope.
The game began with West Indies captain Roston Chase opting to bat first after winning the toss. Jasprit Bumrah got the ball rolling by trapping John Campbell with the help of a sharp DRS call, while Mohammed Siraj ripped through the top order in a brilliant spell. Tagenarine Chanderpaul nicked one down leg for a duck, Brandon King misjudged a ball that crashed into his stumps, and young Alick Athanaze was tempted into a loose drive.
Shai Hope and Roston Chase then tried to revive the innings. However, just when the pair seemed to be steadying the innings, India turned to spin and Kuldeep delivered instantly. Back in the Test XI after more than a year, Kuldeep needed less than two overs to make his mark. He tossed up outside off with the ball drifting in, dipped late, and then came back between bat and pad. Hope, looking for a booming drive, was beaten comprehensively as the ball crashed into the top of the off-stump. The right-handed batter stood in disbelief as he stared at his stumps.

At lunch, the West Indies’ scorecard read 90 for 5 in just 23.2 overs. For India, Siraj had already claimed three wickets, Bumrah had picked one, and Kuldeep’s peach ensured the hosts carried all the momentum into the break. Meanwhile, Chase is unbeaten on 22 and will be joined by Justin Greaves in the middle. The duo will have to figure out a way to handle India’s attack.
