Shubman Gillfelt that that Rishabh Pant’s run-out on Day 3 of the recently-concluded third Test of the ongoing five-match series between England and India was the match-defining moment. Pant, who was looking all set at the crease in India’s first innings, was caught just short of his crease while trying to steal a quick single.

Gill felt that Pant’s dismissal after he had scored 74 off 112 hampered the rest of the Indian innings and prevented them from taking a decisive lead ahead of England’s second innings.

“5 minutes can’t define the 5 days of grind. If I see moments (from this game), I think that’s not in my top 5 moments. The most important moment was Rishabh’s run-out. We could have gotten a lead to 50 or 100. We knew it was not going to be easy to bat on this wicket on the fifth day. So, the amount of lead we got to in the 1st innings, it would have been better for us as a team. I think that was a very important moment; if you take a lead, then the other team is on the back foot,” shared Gill after the conclusion of the match.

Could have handled the pressure way better than we did: Gill

While admitting that the batters could have adapted better to the challenging scenario in the latter stages, Gill felt the final session of the fourth day and first hour of the fifth day was where they faltered.

“On the third day, both teams were level. Obviously, the team that bats well from that position, there is a pressure on the team chasing the total. The last hour of play yesterday (Day 4) and the first hour today (Day 5), we couldn’t get runs from the top-order as we would have expected. It happens some times. There was pressure upon us, and I think we could have handled the pressure way better than we did,” he added.

Despite a valiant effort, India ended up on the losing side by 22 runs. Gill & Co. would look to make amends in the upcoming fourth match at Old Trafford and level the series by winning the eagerly-awaited contest.
