The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is down to its business end after the cricket fraternity witnessed some exhilarating action on either side of a one-week suspension.

The topsy-turvy nature of the league was once again evident as Delhi Capitals, who won their first four matches of the campaign, failed to make it to the playoffs, while Mumbai Indians progressed after losing four of their first five games.

During the tournament, several matches captivated the fans as teams brought their A-game to the fore. In this article, CricTracker looks back at five memorable matches from IPL 2025.

Fans who turned up to watch the 21st match of IPL 2025 between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the iconic Eden Gardens on April 8 saw sixes and fours raining for 40 overs. LSG amassed 238/3 in their 20 overs after being asked to bat first by the home team. Nicholas Pooran top-scored with an unbeaten 36-ball 87, while Mitchell Marsh contributed with a stunning 81 off 48 deliveries.

In reply, KKR showed no signs of being overwhelmed as they gallantly went after the target. Sunil Narine (30 off 13 balls) got the team off to a flying start before Ajinkya Rahane slammed a whirlwind 61 runs off 35 deliveries. Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh also hit some lusty blows, but in the end, LSG emerged victorious by four runs, restricting the defending champions to 234/7.

4. PBKS defend lowest IPL total of all time

Punjab Kings (PBKS) took on KKR in Mullanpur on April 15. Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bat first against Rahane’s men. After racing to 39 runs inside the first four overs, PBKS lost four wickets in quick succession. They never really recovered from this setback and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. In the end, they were bowled out for 111 in 15.3 overs. Harshit Rana was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/25. Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine also bowled exceedingly well.

In the second innings, PBKS needed early wickets, and they got exactly that as two wickets fell in the first two overs. However, Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi steadied the ship with a 55-run partnership off 38 balls. KKR were cruising towards the paltry target, but what happened afterwards left them flabbergasted. From 62/2, the Knights were rolled over for 95 in 15.1 overs. PBKS created history as they successfully defended the lowest ever IPL total.

3. Yash Dayal breaks CSK hearts in Chinnaswamy for the second season in a row

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) hosted Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 3. After being invited to bat first, the home side posted a formidable total of 213/5. Jacob Bethell and Virat Kohli scored fluent half-centuries at the top of the order before the middle-order crumbled. However, Romario Shepherd’s unbeaten 14-ball 53 single-handedly took the hosts beyond the 200-run mark. CSK, however, were not going down without a fight. The 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre showcased his immense talent, smashing the RCB bowlers to all corners of the park. Ravindra Jadeja also played a remarkable knock of 77 not out off 45 balls. However, he couldn’t take his team over the line.

CSK needed 43 runs in the last four overs with eight wickets to spare and two set batters at the crease. Dew was also evident on the ground. However, Ngidi turned the game on its head by picking up the wickets of Mhatre and Dewald Brevis on consecutive deliveries. 15 runs were needed in the last over with MS Dhoni on strike. Yash Dayal held his nerves and dismissed the CSK skipper off his third ball. The left-arm seamer conceded a six off a no-ball as Shivam Dube brought the five-time champions back in the game. However, Dayal bowled three brilliant deliveries in the end as RCB restricted their opponents to 211/5.

2. Ashutosh Sharma, Vipraj Nigam snatch victory from jaws of defeat for DC

Delhi Capitals (DC) faced LSG on April 24 in Visakhapatnam. Marsh and Pooran slammed 72 (36) and 75 (30), respectively, as LSG posted a massive 209/8 in their 20 overs. Mitchell Starc conceded 42 runs in his four overs but picked up three wickets. Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of 2/20 in the clash. In the second innings, Delhi were reeling at 7/3 before Axar Patel and Faf du Plessis stitched a 43-run stand. However, they were dismissed in quick succession as DC slumped to 65/5.

Tristan Stubbs tried to take the attack to LSG by playing his shots, but when he was dismissed in the 13th over, DC had only put up 113 runs on the board inside 13 overs. LSG would have hoped to wrap up the innings shortly after this point, but little did they know that a 20-year-old debutant in Vipraj Nigam would begin a counterattack for the ages. The youngster hit five fours and two sixes to smash a 15-ball 39. After he departed, all hopes for Delhi rested on Ashutosh Sharma’s shoulders. He took 16 runs off Prince Yadav’s penultimate over. Rishabh Pant tossed the ball to Shahbaz Ahmed, who had only six runs to defend in the final over. However, LSG only needed one wicket for a win. Ashutosh hit the third ball of the over for a six to take his team home.

DC hosted the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 16. After RR won the toss and decided to bowl first, DC put on 188/5 in their 20 overs after Abishek Porel top-scored with a 37-ball 49. KL Rahul, Tristan Stubbs, and Axar Patel also made useful contributions. Rajasthan got off to a fantastic start as the opening partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson yielded 61 runs off 34 balls. Jaiswal scored a 37-ball 51 before Nitish Rana slammed 51 off 28 deliveries.

Mitchell Starc only had nine runs to defend in the last over as RR had seven wickets in the bank. The Australian seamer nailed three yorkers, and the other three balls were very full, not allowing the Rajasthan batters the chance to get under them. RR could only manage one run on the final delivery as the game went into the Super Over. Starc conceded 11 runs in the six balls. DC needed just four deliveries to finish the match to register a memorable win.
