The vibrant nation of India has an extremely rich tradition of honouring its cricket stars not only for their immense contributions on the field but also off it. Notably, some cricket legends have tried to inspire the youth in various aspects. Hence, it is apt to say that they have made valuable contributions to society while also displaying true sportsmanship. Considering this, our armed forces too have taken note of their positive influence on Indian society, and as a result, they have bestowed some legends of Indian cricket with honorary ranks in the military.
Quite commendably, these legends have often promoted patriotism and the armed forces in various ways from time to time. Some prominent examples include the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and the former world champion captain, Kapil Dev. While Tendulkar was conferred with the honorary rank of Group Captain by the Indian Air Force (IAF), Dhoni was awarded the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. When it comes to the legendary Indian all-rounder, Kapil Dev, he was also honoured with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army.
Let’s look at the military credentials of the above-mentioned Indian cricket legends:
1. Kapil Dev

The former world champion and legendary Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev, who led the team to a historic victory in their first Cricket World Cup in 1983, was bestowed with the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army. Notably, the rank was awarded to Dev in the year 2008. He received the coveted recognition for his significant contribution to Indian cricket, along with being an epitome of discipline, unwavering patriotism, and leadership qualities.
In fact, on several occasions, Dev has shown his deep admiration and respect for the Indian Army by participating in various military-related events, while also inspiring the youth of the nation. Moreover, the sports icon has also shown strong support for Indian soldiers in the past, honouring those who sacrificed their lives for the love of their motherland, India.
2. MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni, the former Indian skipper is rated as one of the finest captains in the history of international cricket. He is the only skipper to win T20 World Cup, 50-over World Cup and Champions Trophy. Also, he holds several records in batting and wicketkeeping as well. Interestingly, he also had a strong connection with government jobs in his life.
Before making an international debut, he used to work as a ticket collector at Kharagpur Railway Station. However, he left his job to focus on cricket. Soon, he was picked by the national selectors for Team India and the rest is history.
In 2011, Team India won the 50-over World Cup after a span of 28 long years under his captaincy on the back of his heroic knock against Sri Lanka in the final at Wankhede Stadium. Afterwards, he was conferred with the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the Indian territorial army in the same year.
3. Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar, the former Indian cricketer doesn’t need any introduction. He played for more than two decades for Team India. He achieved several milestones in cricket that stands till date.
The 41-year-old is one of the highly decorative batsmen, who was a nightmare for the opponent bowling unit during his playing days. On numerous occasions, he was compared with the cricketing legend Sir Donald Bradman.
Tendulkar was also given several nicknames by the fans like ‘Master Blaster’ and the ‘God of Cricket’. And, it will not be wrong to say that he has made an enormous contribution to Indian cricket in comparison to any other player. So, it was the job of the government to reward him for his brilliant work. And in 2010, he was honoured with the post of Group Captain in the Indian Air Force.
