Somerset have confirmed that Thomas Rew has signed a new contract extension with the county, securing his future at Taunton through the 2028 season. The 18-year-old, who turns 19 next month, has been part of the Somerset pathway since the under-11 stage and made his senior debut for the county in July 2025.

Rew plays alongside his older brother James Rew in the Somerset squad, making theirs a notable sibling partnership within the county setup. The new deal builds on his previous contract, which already ran to the end of the 2028 campaign, and formalises his long-term commitment to the club.

How has Rew performed for Somerset since his debut?

Since making his Somerset debut in July 2025, Rew has featured across all three formats for the county and drawn strong praise from within the club. Somerset described his transition into senior cricket in glowing terms.

“Thomas has transitioned into the first XI environment extremely well and has quickly shown the qualities that make us excited about his future. We believe he has the potential to play an important role for Somerset across all formats for many years to come,” said director of cricket Andy Hurry as quoted by BBC.

“What has stood out most is how comfortable and confident he has looked from the outset. He has a strong work ethic, a real willingness to learn and improve, and the resilience and determination needed to keep developing his game,” he added.

Beyond county cricket, Rew captained England Under-19s to the World Cup final in 2026, underlining his standing as one of the most promising young cricketers in the country. His rise through representative cricket has run alongside his growing role at Somerset.

What does the extension mean for Rew’s future at Somerset?

The contract extension gives Somerset a long-term commitment from a player who has spent the majority of his life within their system. The deal reflects the club’s confidence in his continued development and his ability to contribute across formats at county level. Rew made clear his own attachment to the county. He said it was an honour to call Somerset home.

“It’s where I’ve grown up, and every time I walk out in front of those fans it’s very special. The Somerset badge means a lot to me and to everyone inside that dressing room, so hopefully we can continue to challenge for trophies and bring a few more home,” said Rew.

With his brother James also part of the squad, Rew’s ties to Somerset extend beyond the professional. Having progressed from the under-11 age group through to the first XI, he now represents a central part of the county’s planning for the years ahead.
