India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan endured a heartbreaking personal tragedy just days before playing a crucial role in India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on March 8.

In a stunning revelation, Kishan’s cousin and brother-in-law tragically lost their lives in a car accident on Friday, just a day before India’s summit clash. The devastating news deeply affected the Indian batter and his family, forcing his father, Pranav Pandey, to cancel his plans of travelling to Ahmedabad to watch the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Reportedly, Kishan also wished to return home to be with his family during the difficult time. However, with India preparing for a World Cup final, the left-hander stayed back with the squad.

“Anarth ho gaya. Hum log bahut badi musibat mein hain (Something terrible has happened. We are in a very big problem),” Kishan’s father was quoted as saying by NDTV Sports.

“We are all in shock. Ishan wanted to visit us, but he couldn’t return because of the final. He is absolutely distraught,” he added.

As per the report, Kishan appeared noticeably sad during India’s training sessions leading up to the match. Known for his energetic presence in practice, the youngster reportedly kept a low profile, with his batting session also shorter than usual. Several members of the Indian team were seen offering their support, consoling the wicketkeeper batter.

Despite the emotional turmoil, Kishan delivered a remarkable performance in the final. Batting at No. 3, he adopted an aggressive approach and smashed a blistering 54 off just 25 deliveries, giving India early momentum in the high-pressure clash.

After bringing up his half-century, his third of the tournament, Kishan raised his bat and pointed it towards the sky, seemingly dedicating the moment to the departed family members. After the match, the 27-year-old dedicated this World Cup victory to his sister.
