T Dilip, the former fielding coach of the India Men’s team, is all set to reprise his role in the national setup. He previously worked under Rahul Dravid and later, for almost a year, under Gautam Gambhir.
According to Cricbuzz, the Hyderabad-based coach has been given a one-year temporary extension. He will travel with the Indian team to the United Kingdom for their impending five-match Test tour of England next month.
Dilip’s contract was initially set to run until May, and it was widely speculated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would not renew it. It was conveyed to him, assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, and a few other members of the support staff by a BCCI official that they would be relieved of their duties following the expiry of their contracts.
Those coaches were known to be close to the now-former Test captain Rohit Sharma. With Gambhir reportedly seeking a more influential role in the Indian team setup, it was reported that the head coach preferred a compact and streamlined support staff. As a result, batting coach Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach T Dilip were shown the door along with two other members of the coaching staff.
However, it is now understood that Rohit has managed to convince both the BCCI and Gambhir to retain T Dilip as fielding coach. While Nayar is also a long-time friend of Rohit, he chose to part ways and take up his role with the Kolkata Knight Riders. However, Dilip’s case was different.
As per sources, Rohit, despite hanging up his boots in Test cricket, personally requested Gambhir to retain Dilip. It was initially expected that Ryan ten Doeschate would take up Dilip’s role in his absence. However, with the 44-year-old returning to the setup, the former Netherlands captain will continue as the assistant coach.
Dilip has gained immense popularity in the Indian dressing room with his modern techniques to improve fielding standards. He also played a significant role in introducing the best fielder medals, which have gained a lot of popularity even among fans.
According to an Indian Express report, the BCCI were keen on hiring an overseas fielding coach but couldn’t find the ideal candidate. Dilip returns to the side after being sacked in April.
Meanwhile, the India A team, along with a few members of the Test squad, has reached England. Except for Akash Deep, all players have checked into the team hotel in Kent. Akash Deep is expected to join the squad within the next couple of days, well ahead of the first unofficial Test between India A and England Lions, scheduled from May 30 to June 2 in Canterbury. The Bengal seamer was with the Lucknow Super Giants’ squad in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, but is free now after the Rishabh Pant-led side played its last game on Tuesday, May 27.
The main Indian Test squad is set to leave for England via Mumbai on June 6. The first Test against England starts on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
