Veteran all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has been named in South Africa’s white-ball squads for their tour of the West Indies next month after being rested for the tri-series in Sri Lanka in April-May. Kapp’s last international appearance came in the home series against England in December. She has not been in action, at least in competitive cricket, since March at the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The 35-year-old will look to get some match practice in the Caribbean ahead of the all-important Women’s ODI World Cup in September-October.
South Africa have also recalled seamers Tumi Sekhukhune and Ayanda Hlubi, who were not part of the Sri Lanka tri-series, which gives them seven fast-bowling options in the West Indies.
Leg-spinner Seshnie Naidu and top-order batter Lara Goodall have not been retained after being a part of the tri-series. It was interesting to see Goodall missing the cut despite Anneke Bosch’s continued unavailability. The latter was ruled out of the Sri Lanka series with illness, and according to ESPNcricinfo, her recovery is ongoing.
South Africa have picked five spin-bowling options led by left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba, offspinner Nondumiso Shangase, experienced all-rounders Chloe Tryon and Sune Luus, and 20-year-old all-rounder Miane Smit, who debuted in ODIs in Sri Lanka. She could get her maiden T20I cap in the Caribbean. Spinners are expected to find assistance from the surfaces in the West Indies, and having a wide variety of tweakers in the lineup can work wonders for the visitors.
South Africa will play three ODIs against Hayley Matthews and Co. in Barbados on June 11, 14, and 17. This will be followed by three T20Is at the same venue on June 20, 22, and 23.
