Sri Lanka took on Australia in the second ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium on Friday, February 14. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat. The hosts lost Pathum Nissanka early as he departed scoring just six runs. Nishan Madushka and Kusal Mendis forged a crucial stand of 98 runs for the second wicket before Madushka was dismissed on 51 off 70. Kamindu Mendis’ eight-ball stay yielded just four runs.

As Sri Lanka saw themselves lose three wickets with just 121 runs on the board, a 94-run stand came from Mendis and Charith Asalanka. Meanwhile, Mendis brought up his well-deserved century as the batter was eventually dismissed on 101 off 115. After the set batter was gone, Asalanka joined hands with Janith Liyanage to add 66 runs for the fifth wicket.

Both Asalanka and Liyanage remained unbeaten on 78 and 32 respectively as Sri Lanka posted a defendable 281 runs on the board. As Australia came out to defend the target, the top order collapsed like a pack of cards. Asitha Fernando picked the top three batters, Matthew Short, Travis Head and Jake Fraser-McGurk for 2, 18 and 9 runs respectively. A respite came in the form of a small, 46-run stand between Steven Smith and Josh Inglis.

The partnership was broken as Inglis walked back scoring 22 off 27. Post that, it was a catastrophe as the Sri Lanka bowlers took no time to pluck the remaining batters out. Smith scored 29 runs and none of the other batters even crossed the 10-run mark after him. Australia were bowled out for just 107 runs in 24.2 overs as Sri Lanka won the game by a whopping 174 runs. Dunith Wellalage was the pick of the bowlers, picking up four wickets.
