Security guard duped of ₹52,000 in fake Indian Premier League ticket scam

Security guard duped of ₹52,000 in fake Indian Premier League ticket scam

A woman working as a security guard has allegedly been cheated of ₹52,000 after falling prey to a fake ticket scam related to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The incident highlights the growing number of fraud cases exploiting the high demand for match tickets.

According to a report by The Hindu, the victim is employed by a private security agency and was on duty at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28. While working at the venue, she inquired about the availability of IPL tickets from a bouncer present there. The bouncer reportedly shared a phone number and suggested she contact it to purchase tickets.

Trusting the reference, the woman reached out and initially transferred ₹3,000 for two tickets using an online payment platform. Soon after, the accused sent her QR codes that included her name, which made the transaction appear legitimate. Convinced by this, she proceeded to place additional orders for more tickets.

Between March 30 and April 4, she made several payments in multiple transactions, ₹4,000, ₹3,000, ₹7,500, ₹25,500, and ₹12,500, bringing the total amount to ₹52,500. All payments were made to a bank account provided by the accused. Despite these repeated transfers, the promised tickets were never delivered.

Eventually, the accused stopped responding to her calls and messages, leading the woman to realise that she had been defrauded. She then approached the police and filed a complaint regarding the incident.

Authorities have registered a case and initiated an investigation to identify the culprits and trace the bank account used in the scam. Police officials suspect that cybercriminals are behind the fraud, taking advantage of the massive demand for IPL tickets to deceive unsuspecting individuals.

They have also issued a public advisory urging people to avoid making advance payments to unknown sellers and to verify the authenticity of ticket sources before completing any transactions online. The 19th edition of the IPL is currently underway and will go on till May 31 where the summit clash is expected to happen at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
