Sandeep Lamichhane suspended by CAN for breaching code of conduct

Nepal’s ace spinner Sandeep Lamichhane recently captured headlines after he was given a one-match suspension by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) for breaching the code of conduct. For his offence, Lamichhane has been awarded three demerit points as well.

The offence sees him receive a one-game suspension in domestic matches. Lamichhane had voiced his dissatisfaction and criticised the umpire’s decision in a Facebook post during the Jay Trophy 2081.

It is worth noting that Lamichhane was penalised on the basis of the decision of the match referee and the technical committee. He was found in violation of section 2.7 of CAN’s code of conduct and was even asked to explain himself.

“I shouldn’t be saying this, but the standard of umpiring in Nepal needs significant improvement. It has remained stagnant for a long time, and if necessary steps are not taken, countless players may continue to suffer due to incorrect decisions in the future. We provide the captain’s report to the referee, yet I don’t see any changes happening. Enhancing the quality of umpiring is crucial for the fair growth of the game and the development of players. Hopefully, the concerned authorities will take notice and work towards necessary improvements,” Lamichhane said in a Facebook post on January 10.

Sandeep also had discussions with the umpires after he was unhappy with their decisions. He had a discussion with the officials during Bagmati’s match against Tribhuwan Army, where play was called off immediately after a Bagmati batter was dismissed.

Lamichhane has often seemed to catch headlines with his on field and off field antics, and this seems to be another case of the same.
