SA20 2025: Sourav Ganguly appointed as Pretoria Capitals head coach

SA20 2025 Sourav Ganguly appointed as Pretoria Capitals head coach

Ahead of the SA20 2025 season, former India captain and BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly, has been appointed as the head coach of Pretoria Capitals. This will be Ganguly’s first stint as head coach of a professional franchise. The Centurion-based side confirmed the news on social media with the post and welcomed the 53-year-old.

“The Prince is all set to bring a royal flair to the Capitals camp! We are ecstatic to announce Sourav Ganguly as our new head coach,” Pretoria wrote on Instagram.

Pretoria Capitals have had a mixed history in the SA20 since its beginning. They topped the league table in the inaugural edition in 2023 and reached the final before losing to Sunrisers Eastern Cape. However, their form dipped in the following seasons.

In 2024 and 2025, the team finished fifth on both occasions, missing out on the playoffs. The management will now be hoping that Ganguly’s appointment changes their fortune and hopes for a stronger campaign in the fourth edition of the tournament, starting December 26. Furthermore, legendary South African bowler Shaun Pollock has been appointed as an assistant coach. Notably, Ganguly replaces Jonathan Trott, who stepped down after a difficult 2025 season where the Capitals managed just two wins from ten matches.

Sourav Ganguly has worked closely with Delhi Capitals in IPL, WPL

After retiring from international cricket in 2008, the former southpaw moved into administration, serving as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and later as BCCI president between 2019 and 2022. Notably, he has been associated with JSW Sports, the parent company of Pretoria Capitals, as Director of Cricket, a role that also saw him work closely with Delhi Capitals in the IPL and WPL.

His previous experiences in franchise cricket have mostly been in an advisory role. He joined Delhi Capitals as a mentor in 2019, working alongside Ricky Ponting, before leaving to take over as BCCI president. He later returned as Director of Cricket for the franchise in 2023. However, this appointment as Pretoria Capitals’ head coach will be the first time he takes full charge of a professional team’s coaching staff. Ganguly’s first major assignment will be overseeing the player auction on September 9.
