A week after announcing his retirement from Test cricket, Indian cricketing legend Rohit Sharma visited Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his residence, Varsha, in Mumbai. During the meeting, Fadnavis acknowledged Rohit’s contributions to India’s Test team.

The 38-year-old cricketer recently brought down the curtains on a 14-year-long Test career that saw him being promoted from a young middle-order batter to opener. The announcement was made just ahead of India’s squad reveal for the five-match Test series against England, set to begin on June 20 at Headingley. Sharing pictures of the meeting on social media, CM Fadnavis congratulated Rohit for his celebrated career.

“It was great to welcome, meet, and interact with Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma at my official residence, Varsha. I extended my best wishes to him on his retirement from Test cricket and for continued success in the next chapter of his journey,” he wrote on X.

Rohit Sharma to continue representing India in 50-over format

After missing his initial debut opportunity in 2010 due to an ankle injury, Rohit finally made his Test debut in 2013 with a brilliant 177 against the West Indies in Kolkata. For the next few years, he struggled in the middle-order, but in 2019, when he was promoted to the opening slot, his fortunes changed. In that new role, he scored memorable knocks, including a double hundred (212) against South Africa in Ranchi.

Despite a difficult final year with poor performances against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia, the veteran batter retired with 4301 runs from 68 Tests at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. Notably, all his centuries came in matches India won.

Meanwhile, soon after Rohit announced his retirement, his long-time teammate and batting stalwart Virat Kohli too called it quits from red-ball cricket. With the two no more to be seen wearing the Baggy Blue, the Indian team are in a transition phase and set to welcome new players into the squad.
