The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been one of the most dominant teams in IPL history, with five titles under their belt. The first one came in 2010, followed by a second one in 2011, then in 2018, 2021, and 2023, all under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. The first title came against the Mumbai Indians (MI), who also have five titles. Under MS Dhoni, the Chennai-based franchise has been one of the most dangerous teams in the IPL in the 15 seasons that they have played.
They have qualified for the playoffs in 12 seasons and have qualified for the finals on 10. Out of these 10 finals, they have five titles. This shows the dominance of the Yellow Army in the league. Apart from that, they have two Champions League titles as well. In this article, we will rank all five IPL titles they have won so far.
Here is the ranking of CSK’s IPL titles –
5. 2011 – Defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 58 runs

For the first time in IPL history, CSK defended their IPL title in 2011. They defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 58 runs to win their second title of the league. It was Murali Vijay’s explosive knock of 95 runs off 52 balls that helped CSK post 205 runs on the board. To everyone’s surprise, RCB were bowled out for 147 runs, and the credit goes to Ravichandran Ashwin’s astounding bowling performance (4-0-16-3).
In that season, the Super Kings dominated the other teams and finished in second place in the points table with nine wins. They played against RCB twice, once in Qualifier 1 and then in the finals, and were victorious. This win is rated as number five because it was a one-sided contest.
4. 2021 – Defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs

The Super Kings won their fourth title in 2021, which was more of a redemption arc after a horrible performance in 2020. That was the first season when they failed to qualify for the play-offs. However, the 2021 season was completely different. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis were the backbone of the team, scoring most of the runs for them at the top of the order.
The Super Kings got the much-needed start they more often than not got from their openers. In the finals, Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 32 runs off 27 balls, and Faf du Plessis scored 86 runs off 59 balls. Thanks to their heroic performances, they scored 192 runs in the first innings. This was, again, a less dramatic win, and hence, it is ranked fourth.
3. 2018 – Defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets

After being suspended for two years from the IPL, CSK made a comeback in 2018. They were a veteran-heavy squad this year. Despite having a few young bloods in the team, the Yellow Army went on to win the title with the help of Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, and Dwayne Bravo.
It was CSK’s third IPL title under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. They chased down the score of 178 runs quite gracefully, thanks to an unbeatable century from Shane Watson. He scored 117* runs off 57 balls, dominating the SRH bowlers. It was one of the most famous victories of CSK because of the kind of players they had in the team. This triumph was a remarkable comeback story written by MS Dhoni and his players.

2. 2010 – Defeated Mumbai Indians by 22 runs

The Chennai-based franchise has been in the IPL since its inception and had qualified for the finals in 2008, followed by the play-offs in 2009. However, their fate changed in 2010 when they defeated the mighty Mumbai Indians (MI) by 22 runs in the grand finale. It was Suresh Raina’s 57* runs off 35 balls that helped the Super Kings reach 168 runs in the first innings. MS Dhoni’s masterful tactical move of changing the field helped dismiss Kieron Pollard at a crucial stage of the game.
Moreover, Doug Bollinger’s outstanding bowling performance restricted the opponents to 146 runs. It was that season when CSK lost five out of seven games in the first part of the IPL. However, the outstanding comeback in the second half showed the team feared none and was meant to rule the tournament. Notably, they had defeated the Deccan Chargers to reach the finals.
1. 2023 – Defeated Gujarat Titans by five wickets

Out of the five titles, this victory is the best one for CSK because of the dramatic finish it had, thanks to Ravindra Jadeja, who scored the required 10 runs in the last two balls of the match. Jadeja’s heroic knock with a six and a boundary helped CSK defeat the defending champions, Gujarat Titans (GT), on their own home ground in a rain-interrupted game. Hence, this remains a memorable win for the Super Kings and their fans.
In 2022, they finished in the ninth position, and winning a trophy in 2023 showed the captaincy skills of MS Dhoni and the confidence he had in players. Jadeja’s clutch performance under pressure will always remain one of the most standout performances in an IPL final. Conway’s 47 runs off 25 balls helped CSK get the dream start they would have wanted in a final game. For all these reasons, this title remains at the top of the rankings.
