‘Pretty harsh’ – Shane Bond defends Bumrah’s decision to skip ODIs vs New Zealand

Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has come out in support of Jasprit Bumrah after the India pacer was rested from the five-match ODI series against New Zealand, despite being fully fit and carrying no injury. Bond pushed back firmly against the narrative that Bumrah was simply avoiding certain formats for personal preference.

Bumrah’s last Test appearance came against South Africa on November 22, 2025, while his most recent ODI was against England in July 2026. He was named Player of the Match in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final on March 8, 2026. With the ODI World Cup in 2027 on the horizon, India’s team management opted to preserve Bumrah for the red-ball assignments rather than field him across all formats during a packed schedule. Bond, who has previously worked with Bumrah when he was bowling coach at the Mumbai Indians, was direct in addressing the public perception surrounding such decisions.

“There’s often a perception that players are simply picking and choosing what they want to play. I don’t think that’s the case at all,” Bond said to The Times of India.

Why does Bond think the criticism of Bumrah is unfair?

Bond highlighted that the most vulnerable phase for any fast bowler is the period immediately after returning from injury, when the body is readjusting to the demands of competitive cricket. Bumrah, who has had a well-documented history of managing his workload carefully, fits precisely into that category of bowlers who require structured planning around their appearances.

“The biggest risk period is always when a player is returning from injury and readjusting to competitive cricket. That’s why I think it’s pretty harsh on Booms (Bumrah) to suggest he’s picking and choosing,” he added.

Bond also pointed to the physical demands of Test cricket, noting that bowling 10 overs in a one-day game is relatively brief compared to the extended spells across multiple sessions in a five-day match, which can span close to three hours of bowling effort in a single day.

“It applies not just to Booms but to every player. India play an enormous amount of cricket, so managing workloads is essential. You want your best players fit, fresh and ready when the World Cup arrives next October or November. Every major cricket nation is trying to achieve the same balance, especially with the demands of both international and franchise cricket,” he explained.

Bond cited Australia’s tour of South Africa and a four-Test series against New Zealand as examples of how nations are increasingly navigating congested international calendars. He noted that every major cricket nation, including India, faces the same challenge of balancing franchise cricket commitments alongside international duties, with players such as Hardik Pandya also part of that broader conversation.

What is the confirmed schedule around Bumrah’s Test return?

The five-match ODI series between India and New Zealand was scheduled to begin on November 4, 2026, with the third match set for November 7 to 10. Bumrah was set to report to the National Cricket Academy’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru as the ODI squad departed for New Zealand, keeping him on a separate preparation track.

The first Test between New Zealand and India at Wellington is scheduled to begin on November 19, 2026. India were also involved in a three-match red-ball series starting October 24, giving the team management a clear window to manage Bumrah’s appearances across formats. Yashasvi Jaiswal and IND A versus NZ A fixtures were also part of the broader preparation cycle cited in workload planning discussions. With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching in October or November of that year, Bond’s view is that having key players such as Bumrah fresh and available at that stage is the priority for India’s planning.
