The Australian team is set to play a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in the island nation from January 29. This will be the last Test series in the WTC cycle of 2023-25 that could also determine who will be making it to the final against South Africa in June.

The two matches against Sri Lanka will be taking place in Galle which will be a challenge for the visitors as it is a spin stronghold of the home team. Meanwhile, over the last decade, one of the best players of spin for Australia has been Peter Handscomb. The 33-year-old batter was also seen with the Australian side practising at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

His impressive record against spin has made him one of the first-choice middle-order batters in the subcontinent. He has scored 1079 runs in 20 Test matches, averaging 37.20.

Handscomb’s last series and aspirations of playing home Tests

The last series Handscomb played is not the one he will want to remember as he could only manage 145 runs from the four Test matches he played, averaging only 29 with only one 50+ score in the entire series in India in 2023. Though Handscomb has played most of his games in the subcontinent he has revealed that he has aspirations of playing at home as well which he made clear back in 2022.

“If [being a good player of spin] does help me get on subcontinent tours, which it has done before, then that’s great. But also don’t forget I do like batting in Australia as well, where it is fast and bouncy and I can play a few cuts and pulls if need be,” Handscomb had said to cricket.com.au.
