Cricket enthusiasts and critics have started wondering whether the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was facing any financial crunch after the domestic department decided to reduce the match fees of players and reserves selected to compete in the National T20 Championship. However, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has issued orders to review the decision.

Pakistan’s domestic cricket calendar and structure has been under discussion this season after the board’s hasty decision to stop the National Under-19 Championship after just one day’s play. Naqvi played a major role behind this call after complaints of selection of over-age players and other issues popped up.

Interestingly, the National junior, seen as the greatest platform for budding youngsters to hone their skills and showcase their talent, has still not been held this season. There have also been reports of the domestic department cutting facilities for players in domestic cricket like termination of contracts, lowering hotel, and travelling standards.

According to PCB sources, the expense cuts have been executed because of the increased domestic cricket events this season, which were not a part of the budget earlier.

Pakistan look for resurgence after Champions Trophy debacle

Pakistan had a disappointing campaign in the 2025 Champions Trophy as they lost two games against New Zealand and India, while their last one against Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain. The Men in Green failed to qualify for the knockouts, while arch-rivals India bagged the title.

Pakistan will look to get back to winning ways when they take on New Zealand in a five-match T20I series, starting with the first game at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Sunday, March 16. The two teams are also set to collide in a three-match ODI series following the T20Is. New Zealand will be without some of their big names as they will be participating in the Indian Premier League.
