PCB begins hunt for new head coach, Aaqib Javed interested in new role

PCB begins hunt for new head coach, Aaqib Javed interested in new role

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday, April 19, officially started looking for a new permanent head coach by posting a formal advertisement on its website.

As per the details, the cricket board is seeking a Level III qualified coach with a minimum of 10 years of experience coaching national or domestic level cricket teams. This development comes after Aaqib Javed, according to the sources, is no longer interested in the head coach role.

Javed was appointed as the interim white-ball head coach in November 2024, replacing Gary Kirsten. In the following month, he took over as the all-format coach after Jason Gillespie had relinquished the head coach’s role in the Test format due to differences with the board. His tenure was set to end after the 2025 Champions Trophy. Pakistan were ousted in the first round of the global event, but Javed was given an extension as the head coach in the subsequent tour of New Zealand. The Men in Green lost the five-match T20I series 1-4 before being whitewashed in the succeeding ODI leg earlier this month.

However, the PCB has now decided against giving another extension to the former Pakistan speedster. Despite his potential exit as the interim head coach, Javed may still find a place in Pakistan’s cricketing setup as he has expressed his interest in becoming the Director of the High-Performance Centre, for which the cricket board has also issued an advertisement. Notably, the position of the Director of the High-Performance Centre was vacated after Nadeem Khan’s resignation.

If sources are to be believed, PCB are having limited resources from the erstwhile national cricketers and is instead inclined towards roping in a foreign coach. While the PCB have acquired the services of renowned figures in the past, sources claimed that it is unlikely that high-profile candidates would be sought after this time.
