With the Sydney Thunder preparing for the BBL 2024-25 final, the spotlight is on their skipper and star batter David Warner. Known as one of the best players in T20 cricket over the last 15 years, Warner‘s impact on the Sydney Thunder’s remarkable turnaround this season has been evident. From a forgettable finish in the previous season to a shot at the title this season, Warner’s contributions have been crucial both on and off the field.

Last edition, the Sydney-based side had a humiliating campaign, managing only one win and finishing at the bottom of the table. Fast-forward to this season, and the Thunder are one win away from claiming their first title since 2016.

Warner’s leadership and performances have inspired a young Thunder squad through tough times, including injuries to key players. His league-best 357 runs have played a significant role in guiding the team through consecutive knockout finals. Sam Billings, who delivered a match-winning knock in the Challenger final against the Sydney Sixers, heaped huge praise on the captain.

“He puts bums on seats, and I’m convinced he is still the best player in the tournament by a country mile. This is coming from an Englishman, but you can see why he’s been one of the best players in the last 15 years in this format. He is incredible. Unbelievable talent. But the way he thinks about the game as well. And his attitude with getting in the game and that energy, it’s infectious… everyone who steps out onto the field with him, you’re a foot taller,” Sam Billings said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Davey has been great with all the guys: Jason Sangha

Another Thunder player, Jason Sangha shared similar thoughts on his skipper. The right-hand batter revealed that it’s inspiring for the young players to be around the legendary opener and play alongside him.

“Davey has been great with all the guys, he’s always helping us get better. It’s pretty cool getting to go out there and bat with someone like him. I remember I had a Kaboom when I was young, it was one of my first cricket bats. So it’s great seeing Davey go about his business and just learn a lot. He’s just a ball of energy. He’s been encouraging everyone – whether it’s bat, ball or field – to always be brave. Take the game on and back yourself. And from a captaincy point of view, he’s tactically very intelligent. He does some different things, and he’s quite aggressive, takes risks and it just rubs off on the rest of the group,” he said.
