In the second One Day International (ODI) between New Zealand Women and Sri Lanka Women at Saxton Oval, Nelson, on March 7, 2025, the hosts secured an interesting 78-run victory, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

After winning the toss, the hosts opted to bat first, however, the decision did not turn out to be as expected when they lost half the side at 110. Nevertheless, Maddy Green anchored the innings with an amazing century, scoring 100 runs off 109 balls. Her flexibility, mixed with an important 73-run partnership with Jess Kerr, ensured their comeback in the must-win contest.

Her innings was a brilliant knock of hope for the team, as she played according to the position of the team, gearing up when needed and ensuring wickets were left. This century proved to be the crucial for New Zealand’s innings and played a major role in their eventual victory. For the Lankan Lionesses, skipper Chamari Athapaththu was the pick of the bowlers, taking a couple of wickets for 42 runs in her 10-over spell.

In response, Sri Lanka dragged quite a bit to build a decent momentum against a well-disciplined New Zealand bowling unit. The standout bowler, Hannah Rowe, claimed four wickets for 31 runs. Despite a valiant effort from Harshitha Samarawickrama, who top-scored with 59 runs, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 167 in 45.4 overs, falling short of the target by 78 runs.
