Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin‘s abrupt retirement from international cricket in the middle of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia came as a surprise to many. With 106 Test matches under his belt and considered one of India’s most consistent match-winners, the timing and reasoning behind his decision have sparked huge speculation.

The veteran spinner had played only one Test in the series, while Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja were preferred for the other matches. This selection pattern was questioned, given Ashwin’s impressive record and experience. Reports indicate Ashwin had been deliberating retirement for some time, influenced by his persistent knee issues and evolving team dynamics.

Meanwhile, Sundar’s comeback in the Indian Test team was also a crucial factor. Selected ahead of Ashwin for the first Test in Perth, Sundar justified the faith shown by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir with impactful performances, including an 11-wicket haul against New Zealand earlier this year.

I wish him all the best for his future: Harbhajan Singh

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh speculated that this preference change might have played a crucial role in Ashwin’s decision.

“I am shocked by their decision. It is certainly surprising for such a big decision to come in the middle of an ongoing series. Perhaps we were expecting to see him in Sydney and Melbourne because the role of spinners is very important there, but we should respect his decision. He must have taken this decision after thinking very carefully. He is a very big bowler. I salute his achievements. He has been a match-winning bowler and has won many matches for India. I wish him all the best for his future,” he said to Dainik Jagran.

With India set to tour England next summer, where conditions traditionally favor seamers, only two spinners are likely to be selected. Sundar and Jadeja, provide greater balance to the team, making them the frontrunners.
