‘More chance of playing’ – Willey explains why veterans prefer PSL over IPL 2026

Several overseas veteran cricketers have opted to skip the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction, choosing instead to register for the Pakistan Super League (PSL), which is scheduled to take place in the same window as the IPL. This surprising shift has seen prominent names like Moeen Ali, Faf du Plessis, and Glenn Maxwell prioritise the PSL over the world’s biggest T20 league. While Moeen entered the IPL in 2018, du Plessis and Maxwell have been part of the tournament since 2011 and 2013 respectively, with both having captained franchises during their long stints.

Former England bowler David Willey, who has represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), explained why several experienced overseas cricketers are reconsidering their options. With the IPL and PSL clashing, the number of marquee foreign players available becomes limited, reducing the demand for ageing or out-of-form stars.

The intensity of the IPL auction also plays a part, high competition among younger, in-form players increases the risk of big names going unsold. Even legends have faced this setback, with Chris Gayle going unsold in the 2011 auction before being picked up later as a replacement.

Another significant factor is game time. Many overseas players value consistent playing opportunities, something the IPL cannot always guarantee due to its strict overseas-player limit and team combinations. Nathan Ellis, one of Australia’s top T20 bowlers, is a prime example, despite his quality, he spent almost the entire IPL 2025 season on the bench for CSK, featuring in only one match.

In contrast, the PSL offers a higher likelihood of regular playing time. While the IPL may offer bigger paychecks, the opportunity to be on the field more often makes the PSL a more appealing choice for several veteran cricketers.

“I think it’s very individual. You may never quite know how the IPL auction will pan out. I think there’s a little bit more certainty and security with the PSL for players. And, you know, depending on individual circumstances, people might feel like they’ve got more chance of actually playing in the PSL rather than just sitting on the sidelines for 10-11 weeks, which can be a defining factor for people,” Willey told Hindustan Times.
