The recently-concluded T20I series between India and England was utterly dominated by the hosts. The English unit did not have much clue on how to go about tackling India, as they ended up going down 4-1. Their sole victory was in the third game in Rajkot, where they won by 26 runs.

Former Indian cricketer, Ravichandran Ashwin, thought England’s unidimensional approach proved more costly than rewarding.

“If I was England, I would be really worried, because they play Bazball, one-day and T20 cricket…all that is fine. One can talk about it as much as they want, sometimes they pull off wins too. But, I think they are losing more than they are winning so it is a serious matter of concern,” shared Ashwin in a video on his YouTube channel.

Speaking about England’s track record in the 20-over format since 2024, they have managed to win only 11 out of the 22 games. One of their most dismal results in this period was the 68-run loss against India in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final, where chasing 172, England could manage only 103 in 16.4 overs.

Their innings in Guyana was quite similar to the recent debacle at the Wankhede Stadium, where, after being set a mammoth 248-run total, England imploded for a paltry 97, with 55 of the runs coming from wicketkeeper-batter Phil Salt’s willow. The 150-run mauling is England’s heaviest defeat in T20Is in terms of runs.

They now face a buoyant Indian setup in a three-match ODI series, scheduled to commence on Febraury 3. The 50-over segment will be England’s final opportunity to finetune their expertise with the white ball, before making their way to Pakistan for the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy.
