Rohit Sharma has not been in great form in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, his quickfire cameo of 26 runs off 16 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Thursday, April 17, is giving former Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mark Boucher hope that a big score is around the corner for the 37-year-old.

Rohit, who had only scored 56 runs from his first five innings in IPL 2025, hit three sixes in his innings and helped Mumbai get off to a flying start in their pursuit of a 163-run target at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The five-time champions won the match with four wickets and 11 balls to spare.

Speaking to JioHotstar, Boucher said that Rohit took up the responsibility of going after the bowlers on the day, and he was impressed by the intent shown by the opening batter. Boucher felt that Rohit put the SRH bowlers under pressure by taking the attack to them inside the powerplay.

“Rohit Sharma took it upon himself to go after the bowlers. We saw some good old-fashioned Rohit Sharma sixes – big ones too. I liked his attitude,” Boucher said.

“He put the bowlers under pressure, created scoring opportunities. He was just past the 30-mark – a big score is coming very soon. He’s looking in that zone again,” he added.

He’s not too far away: Michael Clarke

Michael Clarke said that Rohit’s aggressive brand of cricket is essential for MI. Like Boucher, the former Australian captain also feels that India’s Test and ODI captain is not too far away from registering a big score.

“But seeing that tells me he knows he’s hitting the ball well, he’s not far away. He’s just got, he unfortunately, if he could just go steady and work his way into the innings, that would be best for Rohit Sharma, but that’s not best for the team. So he has to play like this because it’s best for the team and the team always comes first,” said Clarke.

Mumbai Indians will look to avenge their loss to Chennai Super Kings earlier in the tournament when the two age-old rivals meet at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, April 20.
