Jasprit Bumrah equals Kapil Dev for most five-wicket hauls in away Tests

Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah once again showcased his brilliance in the Headingley Test against England, claiming a five-wicket haul on Sunday, June 22. With this performance, Bumrah drew level with former India captain Kapil Dev for the most five-wicket hauls in away Tests by an Indian, with both having achieved the feat 12 times.

Notably, Bumrah reached the milestone in just 34 Tests, while Dev needed 66 matches to do so. They are followed by Ishant Sharma (9 in 63 matches), Zaheer Khan (8 in 54), and Irfan Pathan (7 in 15).

In England’s first innings, Bumrah made an early breakthrough by dismissing opener Zak Crawley. He went on to remove Ben Duckett and Joe Root on Day 1 before wrapping up the innings by taking the wickets of Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue, helping bowl England out for 465 and securing a six-run lead for India.

India had earlier posted a total of 471 with centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Indian skipper Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. England responded strongly after the early wicket of the opener. Ollie Pope scored a well-made 106 but fell early on Day 2, while Harry Brook looked set for a century before falling in the second session.

Brook, who survived three chances, attempted to reach his hundred with a six over fine leg but found Shardul Thakur at the boundary. He was dismissed on 99 by Prasidh Krishna and received a standing ovation from the Headingley crowd as he walked back and looked disappointed.

Krishna played a key role with the ball, picking up four wickets, including the big scalp of Pope, who edged a short delivery to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
