Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar has urged the youngsters in the squad to do something special following the retirement of star all-rounder Andre Russell.

Russell has been one of the all-time greats in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former West Indies all-rounder joined the three-time champions ahead of their title-winning season in 2014 and went on to score 2,593 runs and take 122 wickets for the franchise.

Nayar, however, looks at the giant hole in the KKR lineup with positivity as it opens up a great opportunity for younger players to come out of Russell’s shadow and showcase their true potential.

Andre Russell has been a flag-bearer of this franchise. So, over the years, what he’s done in T20 cricket, I think it’s going to be hard to replicate it. It’s a season of opportunities. Yes, you had a few misses with the bowling,” Nayar was quoted as saying on ESPNcricinfo.

“Obviously, we expect every player to sort of be true to their potential and try and make sure they can make a name for themselves. But having said that, these are opportunities created for a lot of young cricketers in our set-up, who can sort of put their name there in this franchise legacy and then create their own brand name,” Nayar added.

Nayar believes that the void left behind by Russell could be filled by the likes of Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh. The latter is a handy bowler as well who can chip in with an over or two if necessary.

“Rinku started for India for many years. Raman started for us in the season that we won the championship. So, we’re very hopeful that they can replicate the performances and use this opportunity to create something special for themselves and this franchise.”

Russell announced his retirement ahead of the 2026 mini auction and has taken up a role as KKR’s power coach. As a like-for-like replacement, the 2024 champions spent big bucks on securing the services of Australia all-rounder Cameron Green for an eye-watering INR 25.20 crore.

The Ajinkya Rahane-led side will commence their 2026 IPL season against Mumbai Indians on Sunday, March 29. The Kolkata-based franchise would be hoping for a much better season than last year where their title-defence campaign saw them finish a disappointing eighth.
