Gujarat Titans (GT) pulled off a thrilling three-wicket win via the DLS method over the Mumbai Indians (MI) to climb to the top of the IPL 2025 points table on Tuesday, May 06. Shubman Gill-led side ended MI’s six-match winning streak in one of the season’s most dramatic and rain-interrupted clashes so far.

Winning the toss and opting to bowl, GT got early success as Mohammed Siraj and Arshad Khan dismissed Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma cheaply. However, MI bounced back thanks to Will Jacks’ 29-ball fifty and Suryakumar Yadav’s 35-run knock, helping them post a decent total, despite some solid spells from R Sai Kishore and Rashid Khan. GT’s chase was interrupted by poor weather right from the beginning. With heavy winds and wet conditions, the pitch remained slow and tricky. Shubman Gill admitted that it felt like a Test Match as getting runs in the powerplay was challenging.

“There was a little bit of chaos when we came into bat after the rain, but always good to have a W (win) on your side. The game plans were different in the powerplay; it was raining, and the atmosphere was such that it felt like a Test match. We wanted to take the game on after the power play, but the rain kept coming. The wicket was a little bit slow, with the rain coming in, the shots were not easy to hit, so we thought, when it’s in our zone, we would go for it. It was frustrating, we were ahead at one stage, but we lost 4/20,” he said at the post-match interview.

The universe gave us a chance before two minutes: Gill

The rain caused multiple breaks, and the DLS method came into play. GT were ahead at one point, but a collapse from 107/2 to 132/6, thanks to brilliant spells from Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Ashwani Kumar, the hosts once again got back into the contest. After the final rain delay, the equation read 15 off the last over. MI, having exhausted the overs of their main bowlers, handed the ball to Deepak Chahar.

The pacer started with a boundary, followed by a six and a costly no-ball, putting the visitors in a strong position. Even then, Gerald Coetzee was dismissed with one needed off two. A misfield and a missed run-out opportunity on the final delivery by Hardik Pandya allowed GT to achieve a quick single and seal the win. The Gujarat skipper mentioned the last over drama but was happy to get a win and add two crucial points to the tally.

“But the universe gave us a chance before two minutes, and we took it. When the match goes till the last ball, when you chase 150, every contribution becomes important. Wins like these get you through in these big tournaments like the IPL. (On Rashid’s bowling tonight) He is coming back from injury, it’s not easy, he was bowling well in the nets, and good to see him bowl well tonight. Thoughts like these can creep in, but we need to take every game as it is. It’s about coming in and giving your everything when you come into play,” he added.
