Ireland to play 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier after rankings cutoff

Ireland will take part in the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup Qualifier, which runs from February 22 to March 23, 2027, after their route to direct qualification was closed on August 5, 2026. Ireland sit 12th in the ICC ODI team rankings on 54 points, placing them among the two lowest-ranked Full Members who earn automatic entry into the Qualifier, with South Africa and Zimbabwe excluded from that calculation.

Ireland required a 5-0 series sweep over Afghanistan and also needed West Indies to drop both their ODIs against India before the September 30, 2026 rankings cutoff to secure a direct berth at the 2027 ODI World Cup. The first match of the Ireland-Afghanistan series at Bready on August 5, 2026 was abandoned without a toss because of rain, making the required clean sweep impossible and ending Ireland’s direct qualification hopes.

The teams that have already secured direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, West Indies and Zimbabwe, alongside hosts South Africa and Namibia. The tournament itself will be jointly staged by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia from October 4 to November 21. The venue for the Qualifier had not been confirmed as of August 5, 2026.

What is the format of the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier?

The Qualifier brings together 10 teams competing for places at the 12-team main event. The team that wins the Qualifier advances directly to the World Cup. Teams finishing second, third and fourth enter a Super Series, which offers further opportunities to reach the main stage.

The 10 Qualifier berths are allocated from three routes. The two lowest-ranked Full Members, ranked as of September 30, 2026 and with South Africa and Zimbabwe excluded, go through automatically. The top four sides from ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 also earn direct entry. The remaining four places are filled by teams who come through the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

How do teams reach the World Cup Qualifier Playoff?

The World Cup Qualifier Playoff draws together the four lowest-placed sides from CWC League 2 and four nations from the Challenge League. The four teams that finish highest in the Playoff move on to the main Qualifier.

The Challenge League operates with 12 nations split across two groups of six. Each group plays through three separate round-robin phases during the competition window, and the top two sides from each group advance to the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

Ireland were knocked out at the Super Six stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier and did not reach that edition’s main event. They will have another opportunity to earn a World Cup place when the 2027 Qualifier begins in February 2027.
