The Indian Premier League (IPL) returns to the historic Wankhede Stadium for yet another season to play host to five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI). The Hardik Pandya-led side begin their 2026 campaign with a home game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday, March 29.

KKR come into the 2026 IPL with a lot of promise and expectations as they enter with a fresh looking side. The 2024 champions have brought in some hard-hitting overseas players in the mini auction who are expected to make their debuts in the iconic Purple and Gold shirt come Sunday. KKR are expected to name a playing XI comprising a combination of heavy hitters and classy players whilst prioritising spin in their bowling department.

Here is KKR’s strongest predicted XI for their first game of the season:

Top order: Ajinkya Rahane (c), Finn Allen, Angkrish Raghuvanshi

Throughout the years, KKR’s top order has always been one of their key batting strengths, and this year is the same. Captain Rahane struck at 161.57 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy up the order, whilst Allen has established himself as one of the most dangerous openers in world cricket.

This will be a huge season for the 21-year-old Raghuvanshi. The right-hander should find himself at home at the number three slot in the absence of Venkatesh Iyer.

Middle order: Cameron Green, Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh

KKR’s middle-order is one of the most dangerous at this season’s IPL, comprising Green, Rinku, and Ramandeep, giving the 2024 champions a good mixture of attack and stability whilst also providing them with left and right hand options.

It is also worth mentioning that the presence of Sunil Narine amongst the KKR team allows them to send him up the order as a floater, depending on the matchup at hand.

Lower order: Anukul Roy, Sunil Narine

KKR has built their success over the years on excellent spin bowlers and this year, two of their primary spinners are capable of contributing with the bat. Anukul Roy’s recent form in the domestic circuit has been extremely positive, giving Rahane’s side batting all the way down to number eight.

Narine, on the other hand, has the capability to play anywhere in the batting order. He scored at a strike-rate of 170.83 last season and is an excellent pinch-hitter for KKR.

Bowlers: Varun Chakravarthy, Vaibhav Arora, Blessing Muzarabani

Despite the injuries that have hit the KKR camp ahead of the start of the 2026 IPL, the three-time champions still have a good bowling attack, led by Chakravarthy, Arora, and the Zimbabwe star Muzarabani.

Muzarabani, 29, picked up 13 wickets at the 2026 T20 World Cup and is in some good form to lead the fast bowling before Matheesha Pathirana comes back to full fitness.
