Former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble has shared his thoughts on MS Dhoni possibly featuring in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2026. The two teams are scheduled to meet on May 10 at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Kumble believes the veteran wicketkeeper is working hard to regain full match fitness, but may still avoid returning to the playing XI in order to maintain the team’s momentum. He added that the five-time champions are known for backing a settled combination and generally avoid making unnecessary changes during winning runs.
“CSK are the kind of side that don’t like their winning streak to end. They don’t tinker much with their winning combination, and they believe in backing their players,” Kumble said on Star Sports.
Kumble revealed that the veteran has been actively training behind the scenes and has also resumed wicketkeeping drills during practice sessions. He noted that Dhoni appears determined to regain full fitness, but suggested he may still opt not to disturb a settled and successful team combination, in line with the approach often followed by CSK.
“Now, MS Dhoni has been batting a lot in the nets. He has even been practising wicketkeeping in net sessions, which is very surprising because he is someone who never keeps wickets in the nets,” Kumble said.
“Dhoni is doing that and trying his best to return to full match fitness. But even if he manages to regain the required fitness levels, I feel he will not want to come into the playing XI because CSK are doing well. He will not take the chance of disrupting the team’s momentum and the player combination that has helped them win,” he added.
Speaking about CSK’s campaign, the team is currently sixth on the table with five wins from 10 matches. They have completed a double over Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, along with a win against Kolkata Knight Riders. They now need to win their remaining four matches, which could significantly strengthen their chances of qualifying for the playoffs this season.
