IPL 2025: MS Dhoni’s 400th match, joins Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli in elite T20 club

MS Dhoni, is a name familiar in the cricketing world as a captain, wicketkeeper, and finisher. He led India to their first T20 World Cup victory in 2007, followed by triumphs in the ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy in 2011 and 2013, respectively. While Dhoni has achieved much in his career, he remains one of the most dangerous batsmen in the game’s shortest format.

Today, on April 25, against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Chennai, MS Dhoni is set to play the 400th T20 match of his career. As a middle-order batter, he has scored 7,566 runs at an average of 38.02 and a strike rate of 135.90. He has also hit 28 half-centuries. Dhoni’s highest score in T20s is 84*. But this is all about the stats.

As a captain, MS Dhoni has achieved feats that most cricketers could only dream of. Speaking of his T20 captaincy career, the right-handed batter began his leadership journey in the IPL in 2008. Since then, he has consistently led his team into the play-offs and, more often than not, won titles. As captain, Dhoni has guided CSK to 12 play-offs, 10 IPL finals, and five IPL titles. He has also won two Champions League titles.

The IPL finals in 2010, 2018, and 2023 hold a special place in MS Dhoni’s heart. These were three particularly dramatic seasons for the captain. In 2010, his leadership was questioned after CSK lost five of their first seven games. From that point on, they turned things around, thanks to Captain Cool’s incredible performance against Kings XI Punjab, which helped CSK reach the play-offs.

Next, in 2018, CSK returned from a two-year ban due to a betting scandal. The squad was full of veteran players, and few believed they would even qualify for the finals. However, not only did they qualify — they won. The 2023 final was perhaps the most memorable, thanks to its dramatic ending.

A glorious career marked by consistency and milestones

In the IPL, Dhoni has played 273 matches and scored 5,377 runs at an average of 38.96. He has registered 24 half-centuries and batted at a strike rate of 137.87. For a middle-order batter, these numbers are magnificent. MS Dhoni has achieved greatness as both a player and a captain. Now, as he plays his 400th T20 match, it marks a milestone he will remember forever.
